Wine Pairing of the Week: Strawberry Shortcake & Sweet Rosé

Your favorite summer dessert has found its match.

I’m a little bit (OK, a lot of bit) of a sweet tooth, which is why I had to make one of my favorite summer desserts this week for the 4th of July. This dessert is simple, light, and sweet – just like the wine I paired it with: Roscato Sweet Rosé.

Shop it at your local Target or Safeway! Click the label below for Roscato sweet and sparkling white.

Wine: Italia Roscato Sweet Rosé

This sweet rosé has delicate bubbles with cotton candy and strawberries on the palate. Its not an overly complicated wine and will appeal to someone who likes their wines on the sweeter side. Its highly versatile, which makes it a great pairing for desserts and fresh fruits.

Roscato wines come from Northern Italy and this rosé comes from the Trentino region. Most of their wines are low alcohol level (around 7%) and have a light sweetness, which makes them a great match for a wide variety of foods.

Easy Strawberry Shortcake (American Flag style!)

Strawberry shortcake requires only a few simple ingredients, which is one reason why its one of my favorite desserts to make. The only problem with this dessert is not having seconds or thirds.

Ingredients and Recipe:
  • 5 cups strawberries
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • One can of whipped cream (i.e. Reddi Whip)
  • 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • Angel food cake (you can find pre-made cake at your local bakery)
Cut strawberries in small pieces and mix with sugar. Cover with lid and set aside for at least 15 minutes to allow strawberries to release juice.

Cut the cake in half, spread strawberry mixture and whipped cream, and place the other half of the cake over the top. Spread whipped cream over the cake. Place blueberries in the top left corner in a rectangle to represent the stars on the flag. Cut strawberries in half and place in horizontal lines. Serve immediately.
