How to Throw an Outdoor BBQ Your Guests Will Never Forget

Who’s ready for a grill out?! I recently partnered with Cakebread wines to create the perfect wine and BBQ food pairing for an outdoor picnic-themed party with my friends and family. When it comes to pairing wine with grilling out, I usually recommend having both a red and white wine option for your guests for variety in both the wine as well as food pairing options. As a general rule of thumb, red meats typically pair nicely with red wine while chicken and seafood will pair better with a white wine.

Here are the two Cakebread wines I served along with some suggested food pairings::

Cool climate Napa Valley Chardonnay that has aromas of creamy sweet apple, citrus, and honeydew. Tastes of melon, oak spice, and apple with a velvety smooth finish that has hints of vanilla.
Food pairing: We enjoyed this with a creamy penne pasta salad with grapes and walnuts. The creamy and silky texture of the mayonnaise give this salad a nice richness that pairs beautifully with this Chardonnay. The grapes add some sweetness and nuts complement the wine’s light toasty oak flavor.

This nicely balanced Merlot has aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, and plum. Rich and juicy on the palate with hints of vanilla. Has a long, oaky finish.

Food pairing: We enjoyed this wine with some basic grilled cheeseburgers. The velvety smooth tannins and balanced acidity of the wine are a great match to these juicy burgers.

Here are a few tips for re-creating this picnic-inspired BBQ at home:

Red checkered prints: Use red checkered tablecloths and napkins to make the BBQ feel like a picnic
Bright flowers: Bright white, red, and yellow sunflowers and daisies for a pop of color on your table setting.

BBQ ornament name tags: Make your guests feel special with a personalized name tag. These little BBQ-themed ornaments are a fun gift for guests to bring home at the end of the party.

Skewered appetizers: Skewers are an easy way to serve your guests appetizers like olives, salami, and mozzarella. Triangle wedge watermelon skewers are also a fun twist on a classic summer time fruit.

BBQ wine glasses: It’s all about the details with these BBQ themed stemless wine glasses. Time to BBQ!
